“Shut-up, Rose!”
“Blanch, you’re a slut.”
“I can’t help it that I'm a lot more attractive than you, Dorothy.”
“Shady Pines, Ma!”
Who doesn’t love the Golden Girls? Even the famous late rapper with his tattoos and hard exterior, DMX, said his favorite show to watch was Golden Girls. The lighthearted banter between these roommates turned best friends is not only funny, but endearing.
What I love most about these women is the way they could make fun of each other in ways that women today may find offensive.
It got me thinking that if the girl friendships of today’s world treated each other more like the Golden Girls did, would there be more long lasting relationships amongst us women?
Instead of being passive, let’s be more direct. Let’s stop getting so offended and say what’s on our minds, in person to each other, not behind our keyboards.
Let’s even go so far as to tell our friends when we are envious of them, because sometimes it’s not about us; it’s about them and what’s going on in their lives at the moment.
For example, “You know Leo, I felt a little envious that you were away all summer and I was stuck working.” Then maybe Leo would respond, “Don’t worry, it wasn’t all roses! haha..” And you would both let go of those feelings, exchange stories, laugh and talk, instead of bottling up whatever it is that’s bothering you, even when sometimes it can just be a little jealousy, which is normal.
I know someone who recently broke a friendship through a text message. I’ve heard of guys breaking up with their girlfriends through a text (cowards!), but never a friend to another friend. [Read about breaking up through a text here in a previous blog]
When did it become normal to not welcome feelings like anger, hurt, jealousy, confusion and to not have conversations about those feelings with each other and try to resolve them? Maybe it became more socially acceptable after Covid? I’m not sure.
So, instead of hiding behind our walls, our phones or even our spouses, let's tell our friends in person why we are upset with them and try to resolve it like the Golden Girls.
I mean how cool would it be if all girl friendships were like the Golden Girls? There’s nothing a cup of coffee and a slice of cheesecake won’t solve.
Have a great day everyone and “thank you for being a friend”, a subscriber and a follower!
